What’s the best product to prevent car, and parts of your car, from rusting?
If you have a look around our shop you will notice that Bilt Hamber offer great rust treatment products.
But, today we are looking at a rust prevention product called Bilt Hamber Atom-Mac.
What is Bilt Hamber Atom-Mac?
Atom-Mac is a highly concentrated, water based, migratory rust and contact corrosion inhibitor. What that means is that you mix Atom-Mac with water and spray it onto the to be treated area to prevent rust from occurring.
This can be underneath your car, even inside your vehicle, or simply just around the car such as your brake discs, calipers and other areas around that area such as suspension parts. Yes, I also mentioned inside the car. As a former owner or a vintage car, there are places in the underneath the boot liner that are perfect for Atom-Mac while the source for the moist boot is being addressed. Also bolts inside the car, like the ones that keep your seat in place, sometimes rust from moist.
Atom-Mac obviously works also on motorbikes, bicycles and whatever else you have around the workshop or house like garden furniture.
What is Bilt Hamber Atom-Mac not?
What exactly is a rust migratory product like Bilt Hamber Atom-Mac?
Unlike protective products for paintwork such as paste waxes and spray sealants, that sit on the paintwork and protect it from the environment, a migratory product "migrates" into the ferrous components, transfers the rust inhibitors in them and helps to prevent those components from forming rust and oxidising in the first place. Therefore, Bilt Hamber Atom-Mac is a rust preventive product and not a rust treatment product.
How is Bilt Hamber Atom-Mac used?
As said at the start, Atom-Mac is, like most Bilt Hamber products, highly concentrated and will need to be diluted with water. Bilt Hamber's advised mixture ratio is between 2 and 5%.
Our general advise is to go with about 5% on cars and 2-3% on motorcycles and other vehicles, tools and items to be treated.
This means that the 500ml Atom-Mac bottle will make over 10L of rust inhibitor, making it incredibly economical.
Consider this: if you treat the underside of your car every 3 months, the 500ml bottle will last you years!
Where can I use Bilt Hamber Atom-Mac?
As said at the start, your vehicle is usually protected by painted panels that usually do not expose metal.
But, underneath your car you will see a lot of bare metal and mild steel components like your exhaust, clamps and bolts. This is where Atom-Mac will have a field day! Not only on older cars but also on newer or even brand new cars to make sure corrosion does not set in the first place.
Especially unpainted brake calipers, suspension components, steel caps on the brake hoses and lets not forget all the bolts. Especially the bolts and clamps underneath the car usually start to rot as soon as they are fitted.
Atom-Mac can also be used in the engine bay. While most modern engines use aluminium parts there are still clamps, bolts, mounts and other parts made of iron that can be protected with Atom-Mac.
Where Atom-Mac really makes a difference is on brake discs, especially when you are a professional detailer and cannot drive the car around the block after the car is done. Rusty discs will always stand out on pictures on social media or when handing back the car to your client.
Spray Atom-Mac onto the brake discs and calipers before starting with your process and you will see that the brake discs will not rust while the car is being washed. It will even withstand acid and alkaline wheel cleaner as well as fallout removers for a period of time.
Then there is the hub, that, if not primed or painted from the factory, is usually the bit that rusts first and it just takes a bit off the overall appearance of the car. Atom-Mac applied to the hub every few months will put an end to it!

How is Bilt Hamber Atom-Mac applied?
Taken from our product page here
- Dilute from 2 – 5% in water and spray onto surfaces to be protected.
- Atomise onto brake discs and surfaces after washing the vehicle and allow to dry (use 1-2% in water on motorcycles and bicycles and 5% on cars with disc brakes). Atomise into voids to protect interior surfaces at a rate of 2ml (of neat product) per litre of space.
- Atom-Mac should be diluted to 2- 5% to neutralise corrosive winter road salt and sprayed liberally on vehicle undersides this rate also provides invisible protection to bicycles, machinery tools and equipment.
- To use following Deox-C or Deox-GEL, or blast cleaning treatment, 2% added to the rinse water is sufficient to eliminate flash corrosion and protect the treated item.
- Sealing in a plastic bag or container traps the migrating corrosion inhibitors and adds further protection.
Atom-Mac can be used in pressure washers and can be applied to the entire underside where it will neutralise road salt and emit power corrosion inhibitors. It should be applied at the end of each wash. Even wet cars can be put into storage allowing the migratory inhibitors to protect the entire vehicle. Aim for 2% Atom-Mac strength from the pressure washer nozzle.
Who should use Atom-Mac?
As with all Bilt Hamber products, they can be used by literately everyone. It doesn’t matter if you want to protect a restored vintage car from rusting, apply it to a brand new car or simply use it on your daily driver be it a Toyota Corolla, BMW, Audi or even an IS200.
Since Atom-Mac is a semi permanent product, unlike underbody sealants, it can be applied again and again.
Professional detailers love Atom-Mac to further highlight their work when handing over cars after a valet, detail, paint correction or even ceramic coating. Non-rusty brakes make the overall appearance complete. Some detailers will offer rust prevention as an additional service to their portfolio. You will find a list of detailers that source products from washme.ie here. Ask if they offer such services and let them know you got their details from washme.ie
